"Marie" is from an early Randy Newman concept album entitled "Good Old Boys" released way back in 1974. I had heard one of it's tracks, "Louisiana", on the radio and was immediately drawn to Newman's piano style which was accompanied by a beautiful, lush orchestration. When I finally got to listen to the whole album, I was blown away. Do a google search and read about "Good Old Boys" and why many consider it to be one of the intellectual hallmarks in American pop music. "Marie" is a love song that truly captures the mindset of those macho men who can't express their affections unless they consume large quantities of alcohol. I ain't saying it's right, but I understand. Although my one-man, one-guitar version pales in comparison to Newman's wonderfully orchestrated recording, my heart's in the same place.
